Zinc Characteristics and Products Care

Zinc Characteristics and Products Care

Zinc is very similiar to copper in almost all characteristcs except for color and patina. We call zinc, "The Gray Copper."

Zinc is antimicrobial, soft, "living", and life-long. Zinc is slightly softer than copper and will scratch easier. Zinc can and will change over time depending on the environment that it lives and these scratches will blend in and the patina will hide these scratches as quickly as the next day.

Custom zinc fabrication, like copper, is an art form. Everything is done by hand with our highly skilled copper smith artisans. The finish and color can and will vary and will continue to vary over time.

Caring for zinc is also similiar to copper. We apply a standard coating of food grade wax to all of our zinc products to help protect it while shipping, unpacking and installation. The wax is not impermeable. Patinas will occur through the wax with liquids being left on it for even short periods of time. Clean zinc with mild dish soap and warm water. If you have water spots or other spots, you can get more aggressive and clean it with a scouring pad/sponge.
